Adam Baker-mill
“WAKE UP! PROJECT” is a series of projects utilizing vacant properties, and as the first project in the series, Botão Gallery (Button Gallery), a window gallery, opened in a renovated former button store. The artist Eiji Watanabe oversaw the renovation and planning, and the former store, which had been unoccupied for years, was regenerated.
The first program held at the gallery was an exhibition by a British artist Adam Barker-mill whose work has been featuring light. The title of his work shown at the gallery, Nastro Azzurro (means “blue ribbon”), is the brand name of the artist’s favorite beer characterized by its pale green bottle and a label with blue ribbons and a red logo. Cartons of the beer were turned to a light box, and the light box glows while changing the color of light in every few seconds.
The light box gave different impressions to the viewers over time; during the day under natural light from the windows, it casted soft light like a beer bottle, and it produced bright colors at night.
